Travelling on horseback
Our trail rides are a very special highlight; we and the horses love these adventurous days spent in beautiful natural surroundings. We stay in pretty agriturismi, dine like kings in Italy and get to know the country, its people and, above all, our Criollos – becoming a great team in the process. A trail riding group consists of 5-7 people.
A relaxed start
The arrival day is usually Saturday, after which we get to know each other over drinks and enjoy a four-course Tuscan dinner. The next day, everyone tries out “their” horse or mule on a group ride. Lunch for everyone, followed by a siesta by the pool or whatever else you feel like doing. In the evening, we indulge in more culinary highlights.
Monday we start!
After two nights in Bivignano, lots of good food and a trial ride through the Tuscan countryside, we're off. The excitement is mounting! We will spend five days and four nights under expert guidance and, above all, with incredibly sure-footed and cool horses (you will be amazed at what our four-legged friends can do) travelling through the wild and romantic Tuscan and Umbrian countryside. Panini or picnic for lunch, depending on the tour, we may even visit a restaurant.
Delicacies in the evening
In the evening, after the horses have been well cared for, we can enjoy a well-deserved aperitif and a long-awaited shower before a delicious meal awaits us. The luggage we need during the day is stored in saddlebags, while everything else is transported from A to B in our pickup wherever possible. On the last day of riding, after a few adventures and many interesting stories, we return to Bivignano tired but happy. We depart after our last night in Bivignano (or stay a little longer to relax by the pool or get back on horseback...).
Our routes
The rides take us either to Molin Nuovo, Alpe di Poti, Toppole, Badia San Veriana, Ponte alla Piera, towards Lago di Montedoglio, Anghiari, towards Citerna, Monterchi and back to Bivignano. Or to Monte Dogana, Castiglion Fiorentino, Monte Sant'Egidio Cortona, following in Hannibal's footsteps to Lago Trasimeno, to Monte San Maria Tiberina and back to Bivignano. Through the wild and romantic Casentino Nature Park, or through the beautiful Umbrian countryside. We have also roamed the Marche and Emilia Romagna regions, and have already been to Rimini 11 times with our magnificent four-legged friends!
The rides offer breathtaking views of the Valdichiana and Tiber Valley. We ride along Etruscan paths, through Mediterranean forests, marvelling at pretty valleys, monasteries and churches, ancient settlements and Roman roads. The landscape is picturesque, with many olive groves, oak, chestnut and pine trees.
Dates 2027
In 2027, we will be offering one of our most popular trail riding tours: the circular route from Bivignano to the magnificent Casentino region.
The Casentino Forests (Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi) are situated in the Apennines on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, not far from Florence. The national park is home to one of Italy’s largest and most unspoilt beech and fir forests, as well as a rich variety of flora and fauna.
In autumn, the landscape is transformed into a spectacular sea of colours in shades of red and gold. The monasteries of La Verna and Camaldoli, nestled deep in the forest and closely linked to the life of St Francis, are also of great cultural and spiritual significance. The region is regarded as one of central Italy’s most unspoilt natural gems.
Along the way, we’ll stay in traditional agriturismi or small country inns, enjoy regional specialities and experience authentic hospitality. After five eventful days and four relaxing nights, we’ll return to Casa Bivignano, where the circular tour comes to a leisurely close.
The cost varies depending on the trail route and includes full board, 7 nights’ accommodation on this occasion, a horse or mule for the whole week, luggage transport, an experienced guide, organisation and plenty of fun. Excludes travel to and from the destination, other or additional drinks, and any – voluntary – tips. If anyone would like a single room, this is available at most agriturismi, but costs a little more.

For many years now we have enjoyed the different tours, challenges, landscapes & experiences. Some highlights from the past have remained particularly memorable for us...
Rimini
In 2016, 2021 and 2024, we rode from Bivignano to Rimini, 11 times in total, a fantastic adventure that will remain unforgettable. It was simply magnificent!
In the footsteps of Francis of Assisi
In 2017, we rode from Pontassieve to Bivignano, once again following in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi, passing several beautiful abbeys. The route was challenging for both horse and rider, but always incredibly beautiful.
Casentino
In 2018 and 2021, we explored the wild and romantic Casentino region, covering 150 km over hill and dale and enjoying many wonderful agriturismi in the evenings.
Cortona
In 2019, we visited Cortona, Castiglion Fiorentino and Rigutino, enjoying breathtaking views and culinary highlights.
In 2020, unfortunately, there were only two autumn rides, but we enjoyed them all the more: Alpe di Poti, Ponte alla Piera, Caprese Michelangelo, Lago di Montedoglio, Monterchi and back to Bivignano. In 2023, we were also in these areas and enjoyed every step.
In 2022, we explored Umbria and Tuscany in almost summery temperatures.
In 2025, we went on pilgrimage trails in Umbria and Tuscany, staying in cosy agriturismi and pretty country houses in the evenings and enjoying delicious dinners prepared by the mama of the house.
In 2026, we’ll be setting off from Bivignano on a somewhat adventurous trail over many hills towards Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. This year, too, we’ll be enjoying fantastic views, sure-footed four-legged friends, wonderful dinners and traditional agriturismi.
In 2027, we’ll be back in the Casentino Nature Reserve, riding past the monastery of La Verna and tackling some breathtaking trails. We’re really looking forward to it!
